1989 Gibson Les Paul Pre Historic Custom Shop Customshop
The 1958-1960 sunburst Les Paul is considered by many to be the pinnacle of tone and craftsmanship. After several attempts at creating a 58-60 style Lester like the Kalamazoo, Heritage 80, Standard 82’s, Leo’s, Jimmy Wallace and Guitar Trader editions, Gibson finally released an official reissue in 1983. These guitars were immediately loved by fans of the original Bursts as they were much closer versions of the classic 50s Les Paul than contemporary Standards. Thin binding in the cutaway, ABR bridges, inked on serial numbers, nickel plated hardware, and nice flame tops distinguished them from their counterparts in the regular line. These were top of the line Les Pauls and were priced a good bit higher than a regular Standard. Precursors to the modern Historic reissues, these guitars are well loved by many fans as great guitars. Quality materials and top notch workmanship distinguish these instruments. The non weight relived body is one piece mahogany for incredible sustain. The book matched flame maple top features some gorgeous figure. The one piece mahogany neck features a bound rosewood fingerboard with trapezoid fingerboard inlays. Stopbar Tailpiece, ABR-1 Tuneomatic bridge and tulip button Kluson style tuners keep it rock solid. Rich Heritage Cherry Sunburst lacquer finish that really shows off the beauty of the wood. Incredible tone and feel in a nearly 26 year old guitar.
This is a nice feeling Lester with great played in feel. The neck profile is not as big as most of the modern reissues but not pencil thin like a 60s neck. The neck is straight and the action is low. The frets show normal wear as expected but still play well. The tone is superlative as well. The pickups are well regarded by many players and really sound great.
Pickups were changed for Seymour Duncans , from the Customshop.
